Plant trees in Mexico

Mexico is a country in the southern portion of North America. It is crossed from north to south by two mountain ranges known as Sierra Madre Oriental and Sierra Madre Occidental, which are the extension of the Rocky Mountains from northern North America. Because of its high biodiversity Mexico has also been a frequent site of bioprospecting by international research bodies.

The 30,000 trees for the Canopy Project include reforestation to take place in 45 communities in two municipalities within the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve in the state of Querétaro. They will take place on public lands, schools and private lands in temperate zones. The Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve’s strategic biogeographical position between the Arctic Neotropical and the Mesoamerican Mountain regions makes Sierra Gorda one of the most ecologically rich and diverse places in Mexico. It comprises 14 vegetation types, dominated by the tropical sclerophyllous forest. The conservation of the ecosystems of Sierra Gorda is essential as they host a number of threatened species and serve as a refuge for migratory species.

Impact

The Sierra Gorda is one of the most diverse and rich ecosystems in Mexico. Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve is a natural protected area of almost 1 million acres and covers a third of Querétaro state. By planting trees, the project restores soils, thus mitigating soil erosion and enabling groundwater recharge. By encouraging and educating communities to care for and conserve their forests, this project promotes healthy ecosystems and well-functioning natural water resources.

Species

To maximize the impact of your donation, our partner will plant native species, including Pine, Oak, Cypress and Ash.

Partner

OneTreePlanted is a non-profit organisation based in Vermont with a mission to make it simple for you to plant trees around the world. Started in 2014, they have more than doubled the number of trees planted year over year. Fast-forward to today, they now work with awesome reforestations partners in North America, South America, Asia, and Africa who help them get trees in the ground to restore forests after fires and floods, create jobs, build communities, and protect habitat for biodiversity.
